Anas Aremeyaw Anas, better known as Anas, is a Ghanaian investigative journalist born in the late 1970s. Anas’s motto is “name, shame and jail”, and he is famous for utilizing his anonymity as a tool in his investigative arsenal; very few people had seen his face until an “unmasking” during a BBC interview in November 2015 — and this was a prosthetic. A politically non-aligned multimedia journalist who specializes in print media and documentaries, Anas focuses on issues of human rights and anti-corruption in Ghana and sub-Saharan Africa.
Anas has won multiple awards for journalism and advocating against slavery, and his investigative works have won him worldwide attention. Barack Obama in a speech during a 2009 visit to Ghana said “An independent press. A vibrant private sector. A civil society. Those are the things that give life to democracy. […] We see that spirit in courageous journalists like Anas Aremeyaw Anas, who risked his life to report the truth.
In December 2015 Foreign Policy magazine named Anas one of 2015’s leading global thinkers, and he has been invited to talk about his work at international conferences. In 2016 Anas had a “Best Journalist” award named after him by the Press Foundation in Ghana.
Two of his most recent and influential works are:
Ghana in the Eyes of God. In 2015, Anas’s investigation into the judiciary of the republic of Ghana resulted in the removal from office of workers from the third arm of government including 13 high court judges, 20 lower court judges and 19 Judicial Service court registrars and interpreters. Over 100 judicial service staff in total were probed, after being caught on camera taking gifts from undercover Tiger Eye PI investigators to influence court judgements.
Number 12. On the 6th May 2018 Anas released Number 12, so named because corruption was the “12th player on the football team”. This exposé implicated almost the entire football administration in Ghana, and resulted in the President of Ghana dismantling the Ghana Football Association. The then Ghana Football Association president, Kwesi Nyantakyi, who was also an executive member of Fifa, was filmed by Anas accepting a bribe and forced to resign. All football matches in the country were called off after the Executive Committee of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) met on June 8, 2018, and dissolved the Referees Committee, deciding that all officials mentioned in the exposé should step aside. International referees were also involved, such as Kenyan FIFA referee Marwa Range. He was filmed receiving US$600 before a previous game from Anas’s investigative team posing as top Ghanaian football executives, leading to Marwa’s withdrawal from the World Cup. A week before the 2018 FIFA World Cup was due to start, the BBC released the documentary. In the weeks following, other figures such as Super Eagles Coach Salisu Yusuf were found to be involved in the scandal.
This is how he describes himself
I’m a Ghanaian undercover investigative journalist.
Due to my work, I am anonymous and my anonymity is in fact an important tool in my investigations. My undercover investigations focus primarily on issues of human rights abuse (especially child abuse) and corruption. I have carried out undercover investigations in many countries and in different continents. My primary focus remains in Sub Saharan Africa. My human right investigations deal with creating a better life and providing equal opportunities for children and adults, whilst my corruption investigations focus on Government employees and executives who instead of working for the people rather loot the national kitty and thus deprive citizens of essential amenities that would create a better standard of living for them.
My aim in doing undercover journalism is to name, shame and jail.In our part of the world, sometimes simply gathering information is not enough, you need to back it up with hard core evidence and this is what I do. My works have received critical acclaim over the years and have led to changes in legislation, institutions and departments.
I remain eternally grateful to my fans all over the world for the many words of encouragement that I receive every day. Your encouragement and acknowledgment of my work makes it easier for me to wake up every day and continue with this crusade.
A different viewpoint on Anas
According to MyNewsGh.com, New Patriotic Party (NPP) firebrand, Kennedy Agyapong is calling on Ghanaians to rise up against investigative Journalist, Anas Aremeyaw Anas before he brings the country on its knees with his style of investigations, MyNewsGh.com reports.
Mr Agyapong who has been consistent in his criticisms of Anas prior to the premiere of his number 12 that bothered on corruption in football, insists the journalist’s style smacks of unprofessionalism underscoring the need for right-thinking Ghanaians to take a second look at it.
“I have told you, people, that, that Anas boy will collapse Ghana. I called you yesterday to come and take a look at the evil they have committed…it is pathetic. If you guys fail to rise up the country will go on its knees”, he warned. The Assin Central lawmaker who claims he has a dossier on Anas and members of his Tiger PI crew reiterated his promise to strip him naked for Ghanaians to know the kind of person he is insisting he is prepared to bear the brunt for his actions.
“I want him to finish showing his video. If he finishes showing him, I will strip him and his boss naked. I have evidence, witnesses…they will all come. I have some boys of Anas who wear uniforms of Operation Vanguard who present themselves as military personnel and taking people’s gold. Just because I threatened to expose him he came out with this claiming he is fighting galamsey. The pack of documents I am sending to court will shock you. You will see if Anas and his boss are fighting Galamsey”, he revealed.
The lawmaker recounted how he warned the NPP about Anas and advised them against his style of journalism but they appeared impervious to advise only to be consumed by the latest undercover job dubbed “Galamsey Fraud”. “I warned the NPP about Anas but today they are seeing it. Anas is not for NDC or NPP. He stands for money and destruction. He blackmailed NDC some years back and he wants to do same with NPP. He should bring it on; I will strip him and his bosses naked. I won’t allow him to destroy us and be powerful. I have evidence and will gladly show it and I will fight to my last breath to ensure that all these seasoned journalists are exposed” he stated.
